Close-up of budding leaf tip, top surface, at 30x.  Shows brown scales from underside around marg, and white stellate pubescence all over upper surface. Male flowers.

Need leaf to be sure.  Keys tentatively to S. candida or S. drummondiana.

Oh, I see, wow this is a weird plant.  So that was a bisexual plant.  The others that look similar but don't look similar are female plants.  Here's some more notes.

 GEN herb, in damp places
 ST erect but sharply repent just below the ground, palmate leaves arising from stolon-like root attached to main rootstock, stem wuite thick (up to 10mm or more), same hair as leaves and involucre
 LF v thinly tomentose and clear gland bristly
caul large bract-like things, strongly clasping and appressed to stem
basal not directly or obviously associated with the flowering stalk, deeply-lobed, palmate, apparently these will get quite large later
 INFL nodding in female-only plants, erect in bisexual plants, quite a few in a dense term panicle, weakly dome-shaped top
 PHYL single series, ~6x1mm, abrupt acute tip, appress, green, clear long gland bristly
 RAY only on bisex plants, ~5x1mm, ragged
 DISC large on bisex plants, v thin and hidden in female plants
 STYLE min bristly thick and scarcely divided at all on bisex plants, more delicate not hairy and more obviously divided (but only at v tip) on female plants

 ST delicate, dimorphic? (no cones seen yet), ~10 ridges, v min clear pappilae near top, nearly smooth below, branches spreading and simple, sheath ~7-8mm, teeth narr lanceolate, teeth w dark brown base, white around this then scarious brownish above that
The other one that comes close is E. pratense but it is supposed to be more robust with deltate teeth on sheaths.

Salix 

Another one on the little causeway by the bench (until the bench moves!).  Just took photos and sample of female aments for later.  Obviously need leaves to do anything with these willows.
