Polychidium muscicola []

Pretty specimens side by side. Nice large thallus.

Physcia phaea [] [voucher]

Nice large one by itself. Pretty specimens side by side.

Phaeophyscia decolor []

 GEN on rock
THAL cortex and medulla K-, no maculae, dusky med to dk gray, black apo, abundant black brushy white-tipped rhiz even under apo

Spores, at 1000x, in K. Spore, at 1000x, in K. Exciple, at 400x, in K.  K+red is faintly visible in epihymenium. Apo section, at 100x, in K.  K+red is faintly visible in epihymenium. Exciple, at 400x, in water. Apo section, at 100x, in water. Thallus at 30x. Shady one with an Aspicilia. Beautiful arrangement with cracks on sunny boulder. Nice patches on boulder in sun. Cute little patch on boulder.

Rhizocarpon eupatraeum [] [voucher]

GEN crust lichen, on basalt? pebbles in conglomerate just above creek
 THAL strongly areolate
areoles 1mm, strongly convex, gray, matte, distinctly separate but packed polygonally into continuous thallus
broad thin black prothallus
MED white, thick, dense, K-? or K+y weak, KC+r weak
 ALG green
APO black disks in place of areoles, flat, rim prom black shiny
epi thick, dk brown, made of v densely packed paraphyses tips, K+r
hymen clear but with brown intrusions from epi
hypo dk brown, tight round packed cells
exciple black outer layer of cells, brown short radiating hyphae inside that clear in K
ascus IKI+, para impossible to separate at all must be anastomosed
SPORE 8 per ascus, oblong-ellip, lt gray when immature to dk brown at maturity, muriform, 8+ cells seen from side, (29)33+/-4.0(39)x(14)15+/-1.2(17)um (Q=(1.9)2.1+/-0.13(2.3)) (N=8)
Not in Lichens but it did help confirm genus (could be Buellia potentially, but not with those paraphyses).  Nash et al. has a good match that occurs from arctic-alpine through to temperate: R. eupatraeum.  The spot tests were right, but it is supposed to have 4 spore per ascus (I saw several distinctly with 8), so there could well be another species exclusively north of the Sonoran range that matches even better.

Close-up of texture and tips. Close-up of top of pile. Gorgeous pile of it in sun. Both species growing intertwined, a bit too sunny.

Cladina rangiferina []

Cladina arbuscula []

Pretty specimens side by side.

Acarospora

Nice patch covering moss on boulder. Gorgeous patch on boulder. Huge patch covering side of boulder, not even recognizable from this distance.

Baeomyces rufus

Beautiful young flower. Backlit young flower.

Lysichitum americanum

Nice patch on an upturned stump.

Icmadophila ericetorum

Peeling bark.

Betula papyrifera

Paraphyses tips, at 1000x, in IKI.  Lousy focus, but still clear.  Note the light \Ascus tip, at 1000x, in IKI.  Lousy focus, but it clearly shows the dark blue mass just inside the IKI- outer wall of the tip.  This is called Candelaria-type. Apo section, at 400x, in IKI.  Can clearly see where the exciple extends out conspicuously to the surface around the hymenium: that's the lighter radiating packed golden hyphae surrounding the blue hymenium.  The cortex of the thalline rim is the slightly different textured hyphae surrounding the large darker brown round algal cells. Apo section, at 100x, in K.  Can barely make out that only the cortex of the rim is K+. Spores, at 1000x, in water. Ascus, at 1000x, in water. Asci, at 1000x, in water. Apo section, at 400x, in water. Apo section, at 100x, in water. Thallus, at 30x.  Color is slightly off.
