BC, Wells Gray, 20080303
WGWI west, macrolichens.

Eastward view from Edgewood Blue wetlands.

Most of these were on rock.

Thallus.  (wet)

Porpidia crustulata []

See 20080326 for discussion.

Small patches on dead aspen.

fungus

Thallus, at 30x.  Cephalodium visible. Somewhat ragged thallus.

Stereocaulon paschale [] [voucher]

 GEN fruticose lichen, on basalt
THAL strongly attached, inconspic basal crust, richly branched, branches thinly tomentose, phyl lumpy and clustered but not flattened or two toned or coralloid, phyl with thick cortex, cephalodia grey-brown and brain-like
Trevor looked at it for me and found both Nostoc and Stigonema cephalodia side-by-side, some thin tomentum, and decided it most closely resembled S. paschale.  Curtis suggested S. tomentosum and S. intermedium.  Who knows.

K+r spot test, at 30x. Pycnidia, at 30x. Lobe tips, at 30x. Thallus, closer, fresh tips. Thallus, closer. Thallus.

Xanthoparmelia coloradoensis [] [voucher]

 GEN foliose lichen, on basalt
THAL foot or two wide, loosely attached, milky greenish-brown, shiny, emaculate, flat lobes, copiously unraised pycnidiate, shiny lt to med brown below with scattered short rhiz, lobe tips somewhat angular in outline due to small bulges at corners of lobe tips
MED white, K+ yell to depp brick red (salazinic typically), thick
 ALG green
APO none seen on this specimen despite being so large
Trevor doesn't seem to think this is a proper X. coloradoensis sensu stricto in <BC Lichens>, so I won't claim this is a positive ID.

Underside, at 30x. Apothecia, at 30x. Thallus, at 10x.

Phaeophyscia decolor [] [voucher]

 GEN foliose lichen, on basalt
THAL few cm across, tightly appressed but often clambering over moss, dk green when wet, olive brown when dry, black at tips, not pruinose or maculate, matte, lobes long narrow less than 1mm wide, lobes sl convex to flat and tips distinctly curled under, black bel w copious black rhiz
 MED white
 ALG green
APO common, raised, black disk, thick smooth raised thalline rim, copious black rhiz in fringe around bottom edge

Underside, at 30x. Lobe tips, at 30x. Thallus, at 10x.

Physcia caesia [] [voucher]

 GEN foliose lichen, on basalt
THAL few cm wide, tightly appressed, grey to blackish, maculate, white pruina-like covering like a disintigrating sugar-glaze, flat, lobes well-brd and < 1mm wide, copious black often-branched rhiz protruding from above but no true cilia, black and corticate below w lots of black rhiz, a few erumpent coarse soralia at interior lobe tips, K+y
MED white, K- (can't separate from cortex reaction)
 ALG green
 APO none seen
I have no clue.  Tim Wheeler IDed for me, despite the black underside.  We decided that it's not distinctly pruinose  P. dimidiata is very white.

Underside, at 30x. Soralia, at 30x.

Nephroma parile []

 GEN foliose lichen, on basalt
THAL few cm wide, loosely appressed, rich shiny brown, no markings, dark coarse piles of soredia along margins, lter and duller brown and smooth bel near marg with black tangled rhiz inwards
 MED white
 ALG dark
 APO none
It's that stupid dark algae that does it.  I keep assuming this is a Melanelia.

Soralium under lobe tip, at 30x. Lobe tips, at 30x.

Hypogymnia physodes [] [voucher]

 GEN foliose lichen, on basalt
THAL weakly ascending, tubular, black below, pale whitish ab, lobe tips upturned and flattened, not perforate, powdery lt green soredia on undersurface of ceiling at lobe tips
MED white near tips to black in center
 APO none
