Madison Heights, mushroom.

Close-up of stem, showing ring and rhizomorph nicely. Spores, at 1000x. Stem, ring, gills. Cap and one knocked over. Not so nice one, top view. Nice one, top view.

Agrocybe praecox-group []

Scattered in lawn on SW corner of Fillmore and Magnolia.
 GEN scattered, in lawn
ST 50x8mm, white to brownish, shiny, smooth, even, little root under ground at bottom, solid, firm, stiff
CAP 40mm wide, perfectly smooth, cracking shallowly radially, skin yellowish to honey buff, shiny
FLESH to 5mm thick, firm, white, not staining, nutty flavor
VEIL somewhat substantial collar-like ring near top (opening on both top and bottom but not movable)
GILL dirty pale brown, attached to sl notched, ~4mm deep
SPORE print smoky brown?, 7.7-9.3x5.0-6.1um, ovoid, smooth, brown, lots of "stuff" inside, thick walls
Doesn't key well  Arora doesn't quite know what to do with brown-spored mushrooms with ring and attached gills.  Keys variously to Strophariaceae, Coprinaceae, even Bolbitiaceae, depending on exact color of spore print and robustness of mushroom.  Pursuing every branch, I've settled on Agrocybe being the most likely, in which it clearly keys to A. praecox-group, thence to either A. praecox itself or A. dura.  Michael Kuo gives an entirely different breakdown of the species complex.  I'm going to resist speculation.  (It's worth noting that several sources mention the root-like "rhizomorphs" attached to the base.)
