Madison Heights, grass and fungi.

Cynodon dactylon []

Just grabbed this flowering grass from lawn opp Fillmore on W side of Marengo.
 GEN lawn grass
 LF short, spread, crowded bel
INFL 4 secund brs in umbel well elev from ground, spklts born singly and nearly sess
SPKLT strongly lat comp, 1 fert fl, axis extended beyond fl as short bristle (about half length of lemma)
glumes narrow, keeled, about half as long as lemma/palea, 1 vein
lemma 1 vein, tightly enfolding fl, lt colored, lat comp
palea = lemma, 2 veins, veins glab
Just wanted to verify my ID.  Rather hard to find that stupid extended spklt axis.  It lies right along the back of the palea.

Spores, at 1000x.  Nice shot.  Finally. Spores, at 1000x. Spores, at 400x. Spores, at 400x.  Double-exposure. Sections. Bottom view and section. Top view and section.

Scleroderma cepa []

Just to E of alley between Euclid and Los Robles, on N side of Fillmore, under E-most live oak.
 GEN ball mushroom, under oak
CAP smooth to finely cracked, brownish, rind 1-2mm white, black and lumpy inside, tiny root
SPORE brown, long fine spiny all over, not retic, 8-11um, none over 12um, none less than 7um
Arora tries to distinguish a host of look-alikes by spore size and reticulation.  Mine matches S. cepa best.

Phellinus gilvus []

Two nice young ones?  Highly varnished makes me wonder.  One on N side of Fillmore shortly to E of Los Robles, on buried root of live oak.  Other on W side of Madison, halfway between Fillmore and Alpine, on base of live oak.
