Location 27
In pine needles at side of fireroad; V damp and shady.

Peltigera polydactylon [] [voucher]
| | THAL | | broad (12+mm), marg distinctly downturned, minutely tomentose except in center, grey, margins wavy/crisped, not pustulate, no soredia/isidia/lobules, veins narrow & raised & some brown, rhiz mostly squarose/paint-brush-like but outer ones slender and long and pointed |
| | APO | | red, many, vertically folded |
Location 28
Up dirt-bike trail on left, maybe 1/3 way up, on base of oak. Drier and
v sl lighter than on valley floor.

Pseudocyphellaria anomala [] [voucher]
Location 29
Valley floor; damp and shady.
Location 29a
On pine branches.
Esslingeriana idahoensis [] [voucher]
Hypogymnia occidentalis [] [voucher]
| | THAL | | somewhat appress, bloated segments but somewhat flattened, smooth, some tight constrictions, tips and esp axils perf |
| | MED | | dark inside, K-, KC+ pink, C-, P- |
All sources agree on this one.
Parmeliopsis hyperopta [] [voucher]
No one mentions the KC+pink medulla!
| | THAL | | subpendent, black in large area near base, pap, fibrillose in places, tough thick cortex, isidia and soredia in scattered small soralia, greenish, round, no cracks |
| | MED | | thin, white, K-, C-, CK- |
I think there's some
U. filipendula in there, too.
| | THAL | | subpendent, pale base, pap, fibrillose, tough thick cortex, isidia scattered in groups of 1 to few, straw-color, round, no cracks |
| | MED | | lax, white, K-, C-, CK- |
Should have ridges or depressions.
Location 29b
Mossy ground and logs.

| | THAL | | | squamules | | shall lobed, 2-3mm, ecort, no sored, "clean" |
| podetia | | to 20mm tall, stem ~1.5mm wide, cup to 5mm wide, well formed cups to v sl ragged rim, covered with fine soredia at top grading to granular to phyllidia at base, many have small scales on bottom third | pycnidia dk brown, K-, C-, KC- |
The soredia is too fine to be
C. chlorophaea (not!!), and it doesn't have sorediate squamules so it can't be
C. fimbriata, nor can it be any of the even narrower-cupped species like
C. subfimbriata. I don't have info on others like
C. grayi and
C. merochlorophaea.

Cladonia coniocraea []

| | THAL | | | squamules | | to 6mm, deeply div, ecort white to brownish near base bel w no soredia |
| podetia | | mostly unbr, to 1.5mm wide, granular sorediate mostly except for base and some patches near top where it is cont cort, small scales near base |
|
| | APO | | red abundant to 2-3mm wide |
I keep bouncing back and forth on this one between
C. macilenta and
C. umbricola. I'm convinced now that it is
C. umbricola due to sheltered location and large divided squamules.

| | THAL | | | squamules | | to 7mm, deeply div, white & ecort bel w some soredia near tips, yellish-brown near base bel |
| podetia | | to 2mm, unbr, to 35mm tall(!), abundant scales on bottom half | no apo |

Location 29c
Mossy hardwood trunk and limbs in riparian zone.

| | THAL | | grey, v min v sl scabrid all over, margins v crisped, soredia all along marg, pale bel w broad low d tom brown veins |
This one is easy;
Nash,
Ways, and
Brodo all agree readily.
Peltigera praetextata [] [voucher]
| | THAL | | grey, shiny except tom right at downturned brownish tips, lobes 12+mm wide, no soredia or isidia, phyllidia along marg and cracks, pale bel w narr raised non-tom pale veins, rhiz discrete paint-brush-tipped turning black near center |
Nash keys poorly, but
Ways and
Brodo agree.

Tuckermannopsis orbata [] [voucher]
| | THAL | | lt green, wrinkled, well divided and branched, lobes ~3mm wide, prom black pycnidia along marg, many apo with knobby rims, black to brown bel w a few rhiz, K+ faint yell |

Platismatia except for prom pycnidia. Compare this specimen to the one from
20070223!
Tuckermannopsis orbata [] [voucher]
| | THAL | | broad, barely lobed, wrinkly, green ab, white bel, warty rims on apo, no pycnidia |
Tuckermannopsis platyphylla [] [voucher]
| | THAL | | crumpled, green, v sharply wrinkly and warty, pycnidia abundant on warty-isidia-like outgrowths along margs |
