Buttonwood, lichens.

Lichens on bark of live mahogany out in open in front of F bldg.  Half covered below to 100% covered 10-15' up.  Quite a tremendous diversity present on this one tree.

orange-pimpled-leprose []

GEN crust lichen, on live mahogany bark
THAL leprose, coarse orange-yellow soredia all over, K+ deep wine-red, orange pimples of pycnidia raised through and above soredia, pycnidia orange top with clear mass of vast numbers of conidia
 MED
 ALG green
 APO none
SPORE conidia 1um or so, oblong pips
Keys very reliably to Caloplaca citrina no matter how I do it, given the absence of apothecia, but this is well out of range, and on the wrong substrate.

Amandinea "grey green leprose" []

GEN crust lichen, on live mahogany bark, in crook where water pools
THAL leprose, med grey-green, some solid smooth remnants esp near and around apo
 MED
 ALG green
APO biatorine?, black, 0.5mm, convex, thin raised margin, hypothecium colorless, epihymenium dk brown
SPORE 8 per ascus, ellip-football, grey to brown, smooth, 2 cell, distinct thin septum, cells with round bubbles in center sorta toward septum smaller than cells, def not halonate
PARA unbr, sl expanded dker at v tips
Keys clearly to either Buellia or Amandinea; the pigmented paraphyses tips makes it the latter.  Brodo only presents two of the 6 N Amer species in this genus.

Dirinaria picta []

GEN foliose lichen, on live mahogany bark
THAL yellish lt green, lobes flat and tiny and overlapping, sl finely white pruinose at tips, piles of fine granular soredia in spots throughout, K+ yell, C-
MED white, thin, K- (dissolves almost immediately!), C-, KC-
 ALG green
 APO none
Wait!  This is probably Dirinaria picta (not Pyxine eschweileri): I didn't make explicit note of it, but I bet it doesn't have rhizines  the thin white medulla melted immediately in KOH exposing the black lower cortex, a classic case of D. if I've seen one.

Close-up of lobe tips, at 30x.  Note distinctive pruina.  This is a composite of several photos focused at different levels. Thallus and apo, at 10x.  I can't detect any hint of the purple pruina in this picture. Close-up of thallus and apo, at 30x.  Distinctive purple pruina is clearly visible in this photo.

Dirinaria purpurascens []

GEN foliose lichenm on live mahogany bark
THAL v closely appress, lobes 0.5 mm wide, white pruinose near tips, flat, lt green, black bel w/o rhiz, K+ yell, C-

 ALG green
APO lecanorine, 0.5-0.7mm wide, black disk, some with striking purple pruina, rim raised thick and smooth, hpothecium and epihymenium dk brown, hymenium fairly colorless
SPORE 8 per ascus, ellip, 2 cell, brown, angular locules

Spore, at 400x.  Marks are 2.5um.

GEN crust lichen, on live mahogany bark
THAL thin, smooth, white, K+ yell, C-
 ALG green
APO lirellae, long and snaking, some br'd, superficial, white pruinose, crack in center pale, hymenium colorless, epihymenium or exciple K+ red
SPORE 8 per ascus, ellip to sl fusif, 12-15x5-7um, muriform, thick wall, colorless, 8-12 cells
Brodo doesn't cover this genus well.

Spores, at 1000x.  Marks are um.  Note they look 2-celled, but those are just bubbles  they are really 1-celled.  You can tell because the bubbles are sort of haphazardly arranged.

Lecanora hybocarpa []

GEN crust lichen, on live mahogany bark
THAL pale grey, unlobed, verruculose, K+ yell, C-
MED white, thin, K+ yell?, C-

SPORE 8 per ascus, colorless, ellip, bubbles but 1 celled

Close-up of apo section, at 400x.  Shows brownish epihymenium bleeding into hymenium, and clear hypothecium running out over apothecial rims.

Lecanora "nonpruinose k plus red disk" []

GEN crust lichen, on live mahogany bark
 THAL green-grey, verruculose, K+ yell, KC+ yell, C-
 MED white, thin
 ALG green
APO lecanorine, flat, thin sl bumpy rims, rims even with disks, disk deep orange to reddish, shiny, nonpruinose, crowded, superficial, constricted bel, amphithecium much thicker below, cortex v thin, crystals?, epihymenium and upper part of hymenium brown and granular, hymenium colorless, epihymenium K+ deep red
SPORE 8 per ascus, colorless, 1 cell, 12-14x5-6um, smooth, ellip

Leptogium austroamericanum []

GEN jelly lichem on live mahogany bark
THAL shiny dk grey to blackish, min wrinkly and broadly cupped and curved, not hairy either side, upper surface v d covered w short cyl br'd isidia and broad lobules
 MED
 ALG
 APO none

Parmotrema praesorediosum []

GEN foliose lichen, on live mahogany bark
THAL pale grey, lobes wide and loosely att, smooth to tightly wrinkled and crisped in older parts, evenly colored, K+ yell, C-, black to pale brown at edges bel w some short rhiz in center, crescent-shaped soralia of powdery soredia on raised horn-like folds in oldest parts (most young specimens with none whatsoever)
MED white, loose, K-, C-, KC-
 ALG green
 APO none

Close-up of thallus, at 30x.  Note lip-shaped soralia under upturned margins.  I believe these soredia are considered granular, not powdery.

Physcia millegrana []

GEN foliose lichen, on live mahogany bark
THAL pale grey, covered w d white spots, lobes narr and finely divided to even lobulate near the marg, flat but with piles of coarse white soredia in lip-shaped soralia under uplifted margins, whitish bel with short white rhiz all over, K+ yell, C-
 MED white, v thin, K-, C-, KC-
 ALG green
 APO none

Perfect spore, at 1000x.  Marks are um.  Excellent example of Phycia-type spores, with angular locules due to uneven thickening of cell walls.  Also note slight constriction at septa. Beautiful ascus and spores, at 1000x.  Marks are um.  Excellent example of Phycia-type spores, with angular locules due to uneven thickening of cell walls.  Also note slight constriction at septa. Beautiful ascus and spores, at 400x.  Marks are 2.5um.  Note also dk brown tangled tips of paraphyses forming epihymenium.  Ascus itself is virtually invisible. My most perfect apothecial section ever, at 100x.  Marks are 10um.  Epihymenium is dk brown to almost black layer on top; hymenium is colorless layer with verticle striations (paraphyses) and containing a single (visible) perfectly formed ascus with 8 2-celled spores; hypothecium is large colorless \
