NC, Smokies, 20060725
CabinCove, Asbury, mostly fungi.

TT to Asbury then toward Hogland as far as first featherbells and back.

Less perfect specimen, top view. Very fragile volva. Beautiful cap, top view. Perfect specimen, top/side view.

Amanita fulva []

By the tiny leaf mushroom.  Yellower and smoother than the old stand-by, A. inaurata
 GEN tall mushroom, under hardwoods
ST whitish, smooth, no veil, v thin sac volva
CAP convex to flat to sl umbo, tawny brown to med brown on umbo, v conspic and beautifully striate more than halfway to ctr
 GILL free, whitish

Young one sliced in half. Two young ones embedded in copious goo.

Calostoma cinnabarina []

At base of oak in moss near featherbells.
 GEN puffball, in moss
CAP 15mm, round, brilliant red-orange, brownish gelled layer inside thin skin, covered in v thick layer of brownish gelatin 5+mm thick, gelatin sliceable
 FLESH white, solid

Spores, at 400x.  Marks are 2.5um. Some gnarly young brownish ones, side view. Some gnarly young brownish ones, top/side view.

Cantharellus cibarius? []

On top of yellow-gate road.  All over.
GEN small chanterelle, on ground, scattered to loosely clustered
ST 40x5mm, twisty, sl dker than cap, smooth, paler at base, sl hollow, tough not breaking
CAP 35mm, flat, sl ragged to v wavy marg, dingy tawny-yellow to brownish in ctr, smooth
FLESH 2-3mm, same color as cap
GILL 1.5-2mm long, v prom gnarly side-veins, sl decur, paler than cap, fine whitish dusting of spores at 30x
SPORE print off-white, 7-10x4.5-5um, ellip-oblong, apic, colorless, stain-glass texture, stick v wet rafts
Seems too small on avg and too brown to be in the C. cibarius group, nut spores are too small for C. infundibuliformis.

Spores, at 400x.  Marks are 2.5um. Cluster of three, in moss.

Galiella rufa []

On Asbury on narrow ridge part somewhere.
GEN cup fungus, cluster of 3 on dead limb up against base of mossy oak
ST 5x7mm, stubby mishapen constriction only
CAP 30x20x15mm, lt to med brown inside, dk brown to black outside, thick, smooth inside, sl ragged marg, min velvety outside to black shaggy near base
FLESH gelatinous, remarkably tough for jelly, smoky brown, 4mm
SPORE print whitish, colorless to greenish from stain-glass texturing, oblong to v sl obtuse at ends, oil drop in middle of some, 1 cell, 17-21x9-11um, sl wet
Spores are supposed to have "extremely narrow ends and fine warts", which mine really doesn't have.  Mine is much closer microscopically to Pseudoplectania melastoma, but isn't black inside and doesn't have orange granules.

Ganoderma applanatum []

Artist's Conks at top of TT on that huge old oak log over the path.  Just starting to grow again.  Growing surface is brilliant white smooth; easily scratched.  Wanted to check K reaction, and maybe spores (I doubt I'll succeed).
 FLESH deep brown, K+ black
 SPORE print unavailable as usual

Close-up on infl.

Goodyera pubescens []

Still trying to get a good photo of the darned thing in flower.  This one by Misty Mellow spring.

Spores, at 400x.  Marks are 2.5um. Nest of asci, at 400x.  Marks are 2.5um. Fertile surface, at 30x.  Tips of perithecia visible as dk spots. Cross-section, at 30x.  Perithecia visible in white just inside dk skin. Good example, top/side view.

Hypomyces lactifluorum []

Near bottom of TT.
 GEN mold on russula
FLESH white, granular, snaps like russula
THAL bright yell-orange to red-orange, not v even but not hairy, watery-dker tips of perithecia barely breaking surface below, no sign whatsoever of original cortex or any other features of host, K+ deep wine-red to violet (most impressive anthroquinone reaction I've ever seen!)
APO clear perithecia on underside where gills should be, not gills developed at all
ASC v long and thin and snaky
SPORE 8 per ascus, 30-40x6-8um, print ?, colorless, spindle, acum both ends, textured, weakly many-septate?

Large cluster of dark ones, in moss.

Leotia lubrica []

Tremendous quantities of this all over lower half of TT.

Nice moist specimen.  Note there are a few apo off on the left.

Lobaria pulmonaria

Just a photo.

Two perfect young ones, on mossy log. Three perfect young ones on a log.

Lycoperdon subincarnatum? []

On big log near where yellow-gate road hits Asbury.
 GEN puffball, on oak log
CAP 20x20mm, round to pear-shaped, conspic d med brown spines all over
 FLESH white, solid
Need to see mature specimen.  Few seem to grow on wood, and it definitely is not the usual L. pyriforme.

Close-up of leaf-binding mycelial mat. Two beautiful ones in lvs.  A little blurry.

Mycena acicula []

Near bottom of TT just after it joins "ridge" near the transplanted whorled pogonias.
GEN tiny mushroom, on hardwood leaves
ST 40x1mm or thinner, whitish ab to dk reddish brown bel, copious white mycelial mat on leaves
CAP 13x6mm, conic to convex, reddish tawny, smooth, waxy feel, translucent striate, delicate, paler near marg, gorgeous
 FLESH v thin
GILL nearly free, whitish, about 2 per mm
SPORE print snow white, colorless, smooth, ellip, apic, 5-6x3-4um, stick in towering mostly dry masses
Spores are too small but else seems close; maybe also a bit too large?

Spores, at 400x.  Marks are 2.5um. Hidden surprise: a hungry worm munching on spores, at 400x.  Marks are 2.5um. Cluster of three old ones, top/side view. Old specimen, top view.  One of the same ones I photographed young a few weeks ago.

Polyporus badius []

Just a follow up of the beautiful young polypores I saw on 20060715.  Yes, they are clearly P. b., and match photo in Lincoff much better now that they are fully mature.  Trying to get spore print again, maybe I'll be more successful this time.
SPORE print whitish, coloress, ellip, smooth, 1 cell, 5-7.5x3-3.5m, full of tiny worms eating the spores!

Spores, at 400x.  Marks are 2.5um.

Sarcoscypha coccinea []

By the tiny tawny leaf mushroom.
GEN tiny cup fungus, on dead twig on ground
ST 1.5x2mm, d white downy, hairs to 0.5mm or so
CAP deep vivid red ab and whitish bel, narrows down to v short stalk if any at all, 8x4mm, paler bel
 FLESH whitish pink
SPORE print whitish, colorless to greenish from stain-glass texturing, oblong, blunt-rounded ends, 17-20x10-11um
Too small, and spores too small, but can't be any of the related species mentioned in Lincoff or Arora.

Spores, at 400x.  Marks are 2.5um. Even closer-up of colony. Closer-up of colony. Close-up of colony. Large happy colony.

Stereum complicatum []

On downed top of oak near top of TT.  Positively covering it.  Very impressive and beautiful display when moist and vividly colored like this.
GEN thin shelf, on dead oak
CAP frilly crowded often joined in long shelves, d velvety ab, perfectly smooth bel, golden tawny to dker brown ab and bel, zone ab, barely zoned bel, K+ red to black (hairs quicker than flesh)
 FLESH < 1mm, pale brownish
 PORE none
SPORE print snow white, colorless, ellip, rough ridged or warty, 4-5.5x3-3.5um, stick wet masses that have distinctive clear reticulate pattern

Large healthy specimen in lawn.

Thelephora terrestris-group []

Just a follow up on the beautiful thelephore in the lawn out here.

Same one as before, after several weeks, top view. Same one as before, after several weeks, top/side view.

Tyromyces galactinus? []

Just checking up on that blueish lumpy shelf near bottom of TT.  Still going strong.  Just as blueish as ever.

Large colony on a rotten stump.

Xeromphalina campanella []

Gorgeous mass fruiting on one hardwood stump near property line on TT.

Large colony under a big rotting log.

Xylobolus frustulatus? []

Gorgeous spread of ceramic parchment under that huge long-dead oak by where yellow-gate road joins Asbury.  (Or something that looks sorta like it...)
