NC, Smokies, 20060712
CabinCove, TT, mostly lichens.

Pretty one just coming up, side view.

Amanita virosa []

Just leaving button stage.  In parking lot right at entrance to Tigger's Trot.

Cantharellus minor? []

Scattering of several small ones; to left of first switchback of Tigger's Trot.

Clavaria vermicularis []

At edge of lawn right by entrance to Tigger's Trot.

Oxalis stricta []

Finally found one with more than two flowers.  Yes, in fact, they are cymose, not umbellate.  Hairs are supposed to be septate (according to Wofford), but that's a really subtle feature at best.

Peltigera canina [] [voucher]

Perfect specimen, forget from where, but it's common in our fields and lawns.

Spores, at 400x.  Marks are 2.5um.

Phylloporus rhodoxanthus []

On Tigger's Trot at top of that first long steep slope (and a little past  near the transplanted whorled pogonias).
 GEN med mushroom, under hardwoods
ST 50x8-11mm, curved up because it hit a rock(!), stiff yellowish base w fine scattering of brownish specks and splatters, finely fibrillose texture becoming downright min sulfur-velvety at base, brittle, solid, tough, fibrous, deep watery yell inside
CAP 50mm, convex to almost flat, tan-brown, granular-mealy-scurfy, fairly even and smooth
FLESH 7mm thick, firm but spongy, bolete-like, creamy
GILL 5mm long, brilliant deep yellow, sl more than 1 per mm, v decur, straight, unbr, uneven marg, forked much near marg, not bruising
SPORE pale yellow, sticking irreg, colorless, smooth, narr ellip, irreg, 1 cell, min apic, 10-11x3-4um

These were on a fallen oak limb near bottom of TT.

Buellia stillingiana []

GEN crust lichen, on hardwood bark
THAL grey, verruculose, dirty, conspic black prothallus, K+ yell, C-, KC-
MED orange to red, K-?, C-
 ALG green
APO black, marg raised black and smooth, marg K+ yell turning red (norstictic acid  can see crystals), hymen v dark
SPORE 15x8-9um, brown, ellip, sl constrict at sept, even thin walls, 8 per ascus?
No mention of the colored medulla (might just be stained  it's a ratty old specimen), and should not have black prothallus, but everything else is right on, and keys well.

Caloplaca holocarpa [] [voucher]

GEN crustose lichen, on hardwood bark
THAL inside bark to thinly verrucose dk greenish-brownish
 MED
 ALG
APO lecanorine, 0.8mm wide, flat, sl yellish bright orange, alg on bottom but not in rim, rim thin and sl raised and same color, rough-shiny, scattered to somewhat crowded, orange pigment K+ deep red
ASC thickened tip V, shaped inside (thickening fairly uniform)
SPORE colorless, smooth, ellip, 2 cell, 8 per ascus, polarilocular, 11-12x5-6um, septum 3-3.5um wide
Perfect match.

Lecanora caesiorubella caesiorubella [] [voucher]

GEN crust lichen, on hardwood bark
THAL white, v rimose, K+ weak yell, C-, KC- to orange in a few spots(?)
 MED white
 ALG green
APO lecanorine, to 0.7mm, thin disappearing white marg (no cortex), d white pruinose disk, no obvious crystals in amph, hymen v colorless and shallow, K turns a few tiny spots in the amph v brief yell, C-, KC+ diffuse brownish yellish orangish tint
SPORE 12x6-7um, colorless, smooth, ellip, 2 oil drops in either end, 1 cell?, 8 per ascus
PARA minute, brownish tips, d granular at v tips

Lecanora hybocarpa [] [voucher]

GEN crust lichen, on hardwood bark
THAL grey, rimose-verruculose, K+ distinct yell, KC-, C-
 MED white
 ALG green
APO lecanorine, to 0.4mm, lt pinkish reddish brown with greenish border, marg conspic and sl bumpy, some large (10-20um or even more) angular clear conspic crystals in amphithecium
SPORE colorless, smooth, ellip, about 10-12x7um, 8 per ascus
PARA sl enlarged tips, unbr, yell-brown pigment in upper third, granular throughout
First time I've been confident about seeing those derned crystals and maye even granules.

Nice patch, on oak limb.

Lecanora rugosella? [] [voucher]

GEN crust lichen, on hardwood bark
THAL grey, white to blackish dirty, v verruculose, K+ v yell, C-, KC-
 MED white
 ALG green
APO lecanorine, to 1mm, rather dense, snow white fairly wrinkled rims, with cortex, disks pale reddish brown to bleached colorless, hymen colorless, epi dk to reddish brown, amph w a few large irreg crystals, rim K+ v yell, epi K+ yell, C-
SPORE colorless, smooth, ellip, 11-12x4-5um, 8 per ascus
Looks different from L. hybocarpa. Only other species it keys to is L. rugosella, but there is very little description.  It is distinctly verruculose, but it is not pruinose.

Lecanora strobilina [] [voucher]

GEN crust lichen, on hardwood bark
THAL powdery-granular pale green, verruculose, K+ yell? (turns dker green than with C), KC?, C-
 MED white
 ALG green
APO lecanorine, marg irreg and bumpy and powdery like thallus, disk pale brown, not pruinose, hymen colorless, section turning diffusely KC+ yell (maybe even sl K+ yellish)
SPORE colorless, smooth, oblong, somewhat bent, 1 cell, 10-12x2.5-3um, many per ascus?
PARA thickish, not expanded at tip, br'd at tip

Spores in asci, at 400x.  Marks are 2.5um.  Nice picture showing multiple walls and \

Pertusaria xanthodes [] [voucher]

 GEN crustose lichen, on bark
THAL pale grey to green (cortex v thin showing much of algal layer), smooth to verruculose, K-, C-, KC+ weakly orange-yell
MED white, K+ v weakly yell, C-, KC- or orange-yell
 ALG green
APO buried 1 or more in smooth sloping-sided warts, disk reddish brown
SPORE 2 per ascus, colorless, ellip-oblong, up to 100x40um, two walls, outer wall 5um or so, inner 2-3um or so, walls min roughened, all parts evenly finely textured, mature ones with weakly wrinkled or transversely rugose appearance, pore at one end and/or squared off inside at ends (seems variable)
Seems clea, but Brodo claims it doesn't belong in the mountains.  Found several asci with two spores each totally filling them, so that is reliable.  The walls are def roughened.  There is def some sort of KC+ orange, although the other reactions (C in cortex and K in medulla) are weak at best  never did get a C+ yell reaction anywhere.

Physcia pumilior []

GEN foliose lichen, on hardwood bark
THAL v pale grey, flat, v fine (0.2-0.3mm wide), flat, small rosette, even color to sl granular or bumpy, no cilia but some pale short sharp rhiz protruding, white bel, K+ yell, C-
MED white, K+ yell near marg (but negative where too much medulla has been scraped away making it very difficult to get a positive reaction), C-, KC-
 ALG green
APO one present, raised, deep red-brown, 0.3mm wide, smooth thin marg, v constrict bel to cup-like
SPORE smooth, ellip, lt greenish brownish, 2 cell, small angular locules (inverted V shape in middle half of locules), 8 per ascus, 12-13x5-7um
Very good match except for ambiguous medulla K reaction, but Brodo mentions that it is difficult to obtain.

Xanthoria fulva [] [voucher]

GEN foliose lichen, on hardwood bark
THAL bright yellow to sl greenish esp tips, smooth, even, sl convex, tips upturned a bit, a few pale rhiz present, no visible soredia, lobes narr and finely lobed, forming rosette, cylindrical orange pycnidia scattered on surface, K+ deep red
 APO none
Despite lack of soredia it can only be the one species (also the only one listed in our area).

white-wash-lichen [] [voucher]

On sumac bark all over.
