Mushrooms

Amanita virosa []
Just uphill from old road at foot of slope above Mary-Wanda.
| | GEN | | med-tall mushroom, on soil under hemlocks and hardwoods, v pleasant sweet odor but becoming unpleasant in age |
| | ST | | 100x8-10mm, thinner ab but abruptly flaring at v top, snow white, fibrous, brittle, snapping but fiberous sheath holding on, min scurfy ab ring, ragged scurfy hanging white skirt at top, prom sac-like volva at base, solid |
| | CAP | | 60mm, convex to flat, splitting near edge, snow white w v faint tan blush in places but I got a blue-ish impression at first, smooth and dry but tacky, fibrillose, min ragged partial veil remnants hanging from marg, not at all striate |
| | FLESH | | white, 3-4mm thick, brittle, soft, K+ faint yell |
| | GILL | | snow white, free, unbr, finely erose marg, "chalky" appearance |
| | SPORE | | print snow white, round, colorless, smooth, 1 cell| sticks together in large irreg sheets where walls appear to merge | | must be enveloped in thin gooey layer, 6.5-7.5um, borne 4 per basidium |
|
If there were only 2 spores per basidium it would've been
A. bisporigera. Such a beautiful mushroom
how appropriately named.

Psathyrella foenisecii
Lawn to right of cabin, in great numbers. Rained a lot, then didn't rain yesterday, then this morning, poof!
| | GEN | | small mushroom, scattered, abundant, morning fruiting, in lawn |
| | ST | | 80-90x2mm, not straight but erect, lt tan to sl dker bel, smooth to v scattered v min fibrillose catching dk brown spores, fibrous, low white mycelial fuzz at base, solid, soft flexible and cracking fibrous but not breaking |
| | CAP | | to 20mm wide (most smaller), convex, tan to dirty dk brown striate, sl dker in ctr, v min cottony appearance at 30x but feels smooth |
| | FLESH | | v thin (< 1mm), pale, soft and flex but not brittle |
| | GILL | | dirty tan with dk brown stains from spores, unbr, notched to adnate, ~2 per mm, straight, edge v min roughened |
| | SPORE | | print dk brown, dk brown, ellip, apic pore, smooth to min roughened, 1 cell, not sticking together noticeably, 11.5-15x7-8.5um, noticable walls (1-1.5um thick) |

Ramaria stricta concolor
Where old road at foot of slope crosses Messer branch.
| | GEN | | coral fungus, on rotting hardwood, mild but not necessarily pleasant odor |
| | CAP | | erect slender brs. br'ing in 2-3's, acute pts, min white pruinose (spores?), total 40mm tall, brs typically 5-10x1-2mm, fleshy tan bel to pale yellish tan ab, white mycelial fuzz at base, single att for entire thing, bruises v slowly brown (but not easy to bruise! it only bruised in a finger-print pattern after really squeezing the heck out of it) |
| | SPORE | | print fleshy buff, spores borne all over brs, ellip, smooth, colorless, mottled, 1 cell, 7-8x3.5-4.5um, many misshapen, don't stick together much |
A lot hinges on ornamentation of spores. How minute is "minutely roughened"? Easily matches both
R. s. and
Lentaria pinicola.

Russula maculata-group []
Just down from Mary-Wanda start on left side of road.
| | GEN | | med-short mushroom, on mossy rocky side of road in moist shaded area under rhododendrons, no odor |
| | ST | | stout and rel short, white, presumably brittle, smooth |
| | CAP | | 60mm, concave, v dry and smooth, gorgeous hot-pink to v sl bluish, evenly colored |
| | FLESH | | 3mm thick, white, brittle, soft |
| | GILL | | att, tawny, unbr, clean, straight |
| | SPORE | | print striking ochre, round to sl ellip, grey, 1 cell, v conspic warty, sticking together in irreg lumps, 7-10x6.5-9.5um |

Russula sororia
Just a photo.

Tyromyces unicolor []
Just uphill from old road at foot of slope above Mary-Wanda.
| | GEN | | small toothed shelf fungus, on standing dead oak trunk, v mild pleasant odor |
| | CAP | | creamy white, v d white fuzzy, to 20mm wide, broadly att, top sloping a bit |
| | FLESH | | soft but firm, creamy, 3mm thick, K- |
| | GILL | | irreg teeth, more off-white creamy, teeth to 4-5mm long, descending trunk 10-15mm, more fuzzy cap-tissue backing teeth descending along trunk |
| | SPORE | | print creamy white, round to v sl ellip, colorless, 1 cell, smooth, packs in great raft-like sheets, 5um |
Only mentioned in passing under
T. leucospongia in
Arora (which it keys out to fairly convincingly). While the latter has incorrect spores and cap margin, the former corrects both errors.
Other Critters

Callosamia promethea
Female. In grass just sitting there. Wonder what was wrong with the poor thing? Gorgeous creature.

Terrapene carolina []
Laying eggs... in the middle of our driveway! Never even bothered to cover them.
