Cad's Crotch, many flowers and lichens.

Same place as yesterday. How did I miss the phlox and draba?!  Also did a lichen collection spree on the conglomerate sandstone-like fins.

I always thought this was honeysweet (Tidestromia), but examining flowers I realize it can't possibly be.  Fairly poetic that it turns out to be my stupid Shepherdia after so notably mis-identifying Olea europaea as this a few months ago!  Not sure about the species, and would like to see a female plant before even signing off on the genus.  However, this does look fairly promising except for my flowers being significantly too large.

Further observations:
MALE FL 8mm across, 8 glands
FEM FL 5.5mm across, 8-9 glands, hairy in throat, style 3mm, ov 2x1.5mm, ov sup though surrounded by calyx tube/throat making it appear inf, stig lin, 1 ovule, 1 chamb

Candelariella aurella

 GEN crust lichen, on sandstone

APO lecanorine, lots but not packed, bright yell, K-, C-, KC-, well devel smooth marg, disk bownish yell
 SPORE

Xanthoparmelia plittii

GEN foliose lichen, on various rocks
THAL smooth yell-green, black pycnidia, black marg, bot brown, rhiz present, K-, C-, KC+ yell
isidia v d, rounded cyl, tips blackish, some br'd
bunched up and sorta dirty-looking
MED white, K+ deep yell, C-
 ALG green
 APO none present

Caloplaca flavovirescens

 GEN crust lichen, on sandstone
THAL yell to orangish dispersed areolate, K+ wine red, C-
APO lots, packed, bright orange, convex, lecanorine, non-prominant thin ~smooth sl lter marg
disk sorta rough ridged-bumpy, dull
 SPORE
Entirely plausible, but coverage is so incomplete for this genus I hate to sound confident.

Caloplaca trachyphylla?

GEN crust lichen, on sandstone and other rocks
THAL lobed, yell-orange to red-orange, bright and striking, lobes gen < 2mm some to 3x1mm, convex, rough, areolate inside, K+ wine red
 APO same color, lecanorine
Could also just as easily be C. saxicola, I guess, and probably a host of other nearly identical species Brodo doesn't even mention...

Rhizoplaca peltata

 GEN umbilicate lichen, on sandstone
THAL 10-15mm wide, bunched-up-ruffled, smooth greyish yellowish green, KC+ yell, K-, C-, marg thick and granular black, rough brownish bel w wh cracks, no rhiz
 MED white
 ALG green
APO lecanorine, concave, smooth, not pruinose, brownish to almost greenish
This genus is covered in full in Brodo, so I feel somewhat confident for a change...

Caloplaca arenaria?

 GEN crust lichen, rock
 THAL endolith
APO lecanorine, packed, v thin marg, marg and disk bright red orange, rough, K+ wine red, C-
 SPORE
Could it be Protoblastenia?

Xanthoria fallax

No need to take notes: yell-orange, squamulose, K+ wine red, soralia under upturned lips... very distinctive.

Caloplaca microphyllina?

GEN crust lichen, on wood (weathered dead bare juniper)
THAL microsquamulose to coarse granular, edges of squamules branched or granular like isidia, yellow green to yellow orange in one, yellow orange to red orange in another, K+ wine red
APO bright orange w yellow orange marg, lots
Definitely not white underneath, else I might have considered Xanthoria.  Could it be C. decipiens?  Or any of dozens of others not described in Brodo?

Xanthoparmelia weberi?

GEN foliose lichen, on wood (weathered dead bare juniper)
THAL yell-green, shiny, black marg, smooth, KC+ yell, K-, C-, brown bel w rhiz, closely att, wrinkled/bunched in the center, covered w globular unbr isidia
 MED wh, K-, C-, KC-
 APO none
Definitely isidia not soredia (too large, smooth, corticate). Doesn't key out on wood.  On rock I come up with X. weberi, which mentions that it rarely is found on wood... but it is not supposed to make it into Utah.

Psora decipiens

 GEN squamulose lichen, on soil
THAL round disks, wh tom bel, orange-brown ab, shiny smooth, wh ragged marg, marg sl upturned, 1-1.5mm
APO marginal, hemispherical black mounds, somewhat rough

Placidium lacinulatum?

 GEN squamulose lichen, on soil
THAL irreg patches to 5mm, bumpy to lobed, dk green when wet to brown when dry, largish black dots (perithecia?), lt brown bel (hard to clean soil off to see), few rhiz

Collema crispum?

GEN squamulose jelly lichen, on soil
THAL crisped, erect, no cortex, blackish greenish, upright curved lobules, thickened margin
 APO none
Mostly just a guess, as I can never find apothecia on these darned things.

Psora tuckermanii

 GEN squamulose lichen, on soil
THAL 3mm+, irreg, convex, wh marg disappearing almost entirely w age, fissured, green when wet brown when dry, smooth
 MED wh, K-, C-, KC-
 ALG green
APO red brown, granular, mounts, laminal

Candelariella terrigena

 GEN crust lichen, on moss
THAL v min lobed to areolate, bright yell, bumpy, min rough, K-, C-, KC-, no rhiz bel, sl white just under edge but cannot separate thallus from substrate
APO lecanorine, irreg, sl browner disk, no pruina, marg discontinuous
Would like spores to verify: slightly incorrect range.

Fulgensia desertorum

 GEN crust lichen, on soil
THAL sulfur yellow, squamulose, white pruina conspic in parts, convex, v closely att, K+ wine red
APO brownish red-orange, min rough but not pruinose
Again, would like spores to verify.

Rhizoplaca melanophthalma

 GEN umbilicate lichen, on rock
THAL v crumpled and bunched, mounded, lt yellish grey-green, smooth, brown smooth bel (except for two wh cracks created by prying the darned thing off the rock)
APO wavy, packed, tiny to large, green, pruinose

Rhizoplaca chrysoleuca

Rhizoplaca subdiscrepans

 GEN foliose lichen, on rock
THAL lt green, v areolate to wrinkled-bumpy, smooth, brown bel, varying from umbilicate (and easy to pry off) to broadly attached (and bloody impossible to remove)
APO pruinose, lt orange, raised ragged marg, lecanorine, packed, wavy, tiny to huge
My sample is somewhat intermediate, though perhaps closer to R. chrysoleuca.  It bears mentioning that this sample was only a piece of a larger mass, proving that it is not umbilicate.

Dermatocarpon miniatum

 GEN umbilicate lichen, on rock
THAL grey, thin, pruinose, black fots, large lobes, purple-brown bel, rounded bumpy but not rough bel

Glypholecia scabra

 GEN umbilicate lichen, on rock

 MED white
 ALG green, sparse
APO cryptolecanorine, broken up w sterile tissue, dk brown

Physcia dubia

 GEN foliose lichen, on bark
THAL lt grey, wh pruinose at tips, wh maculae/pseudocyphellae inside, v few black dots, convex, v narr lobes fanning out at tips, soralia discont (lip-shaped) all along margins, white to pale tan bel, pale rhiz bel, K+ yell, C-
 MED white, K-, C-, KC-
 ALG green
APO rare, black, lecanorine, irreg, v wh pruinose, grey ragged marg

Xanthoria montana

 GEN foliose lichen, on bark
THAL bright yell-orange, wh bel, sp wh rhiz, K+ wine red, dk orange pycnidia, finely lobed, loose and spidery

?

 GEN foliose lichen, on bark
THAL brown to grey, narr convex lobes, smooth, no pruina, conspic black-rimmed pycnidia(?), edges disintigrate into black fine granules, short white bristly cilia, black w black rhiz bel (except wh to brown at edge), K-, C-, KC-
 MED white, v thin, K-, C-
 ALG green
 APO none?

Infl. Long ligule, at 10x.  Marks are mm. Lemma, at 30x.  Note silky shaggy hair along bottom half of the mid and lateral veins.
