AR, Ozarks, 20060128
Random camp, lichens.

Hwy 123 N of Lamar not too far inside Nat Forest on little 4WD road off to right up in logging area.

Cladina evansii

Looks identical to sample from Torreya (I can look at them side-by-side under the dissecting scope), but despite excellent match in both description and picture, C. evansii doesn't belong anywhere near the Ozarks.  Must be either C. subtenuis or C. rangifera but I dispair of ever destermining which with any resembling confidence w/o a chemistry set.

Did chemical spot tests on 20060225: rules out C. subtenuis at least.  See comments on 20060125.

Cladonia chlorophaea

GEN fruticose, on bark/wood chip in open
squamules "grey-green", discrete, well-lobed, tiny squamules, wh farinose bel
podetia 10-15mm tall, "goblet" cups, unbr, v granular all over and in cup, few squamules bel
apothecia brown, mostly min spots around rim but some large blobs on stalks from rim
growing inside the cladina above
chemistry K- to golden on apothecia, C-, KC-, done on squamules and one cup

Cladonia strepsilis

 GEN squamulose, on ground
thallus curled up, min lobes to 3mm wide, grey-green ab, wh bel, no powder or granules
forming round clumps, K-, KC+ blue-green, C- (bleaches cortex and brings v tiny bit of brownish even green out of medulla)
Don't see the wh maculae.

Parmotrema hypotropum

 GEN foliose, on decid twig
thallus ruffled, lobes 8-10mm wide, grey-green, v d wh maculae, shiny, edges sorediate, long black cil uniform, wh wide marg bel, dk brown-black in center w black unbr? rhiz, K+ yellow, C-, KC-
medulla white, K+ yellow slowly turning bright blood red, C-, KC-
no apothecia

Flavoparmelia caperata

 GEN foliose, on decid st
thallus lobes 3-5mm, no cilia, black bel, covered w short black unbr? rhiz bel, flat, yell-green, dappled w wh probably from mis-handling, big gnurbly finely granular-branching lt green soralia
no apothecia
Soralia don't seem to match too well, and I still wonder about the apparent pseudocyphellae that I wrote off to bending and chipping deep in my specimen container.  Shoot, now looking at the descriptions side-by-side these two are almost certainly the same species.

 GEN foliose, on decid st
thallus flat to finely wrinkled or bunched up, lt yellowish grey-green, lobes 6-7mm, black bel to reddish brown at tips, d short unbr black rhiz, no cilia, broadly-gnurbled clust of soredia in center, no wh markings or marginal soredia or anything like that, K+ green-yellow, KC+ deep yellow, C-
medulla white, K+ yellow, KC+ pink, C-
The KC medulla test is difficult because even sl too much (almost any at all!) C bleaches out the brief pinkish reaction  put K on there (very hydrophobic!) until it starts turning yellow, then scrape tip of C tube across it and watch for the momentary blush of pink before it bleaches out.

 GEN foliose, on pine bark
thallus flat to sl bunched up, lt yellowish green, lobes 3-5mm, flat, no cil, v few wh maculae spots, no isidia or soredia present on this specimen, finely wrinkled inside, black to golden tan at marg bel, black unbr rhiz over almost entire surface, rhiz foot pale and min br'd (crown or star-like) where attached to substrate, K+ green/yellow, C-, KC+ deep yellow
medulla white, K-, KC+ pink, C-
Not sure this is the same thing, but it comes closest.  (Chemistry confirms genus  are there any species of Flavoparmelia without soredia??)

Usnea strigosa

 GEN fruticose, on decid twig
thallus usnea, bushy, base browned a bit, sp short pap, medulla pink, cortex lt yell green, axis solid and tough, base of pap broad
apothecia flat, pap on back, fimbril cil, lt green

Chemistry from 20060226:
 GEN cortex v thick
medulla orangish, K+ vaguely yellowish turning deeper with C, C-

Cladonia peziziformis

GEN fruticose, on wood chip on ground
squamules med grey green, min, finely div, somewhat granular, K-, C-, KC- (all chems just wetting it making it greener)
podetia ~10x0.7mm, twisted, rough-bumpy, not sorediate, many squam on some, split down side, not to few br'd
apothecia lt brown, at ends, larger than slender podetia, to 2mm

Cladonia

GEN fruticose, on mossy wood chip and ground
squamules finely lobed, grey green ab, wh bel, smooth to somewhat granular, C-, KC-, K+ yell to brown
podetia 10x0.8mm, uniform to sl tapering cyl, covered w granules, mixed w min squam bel, unbr
apothecia tiny brown dot at tips
This is very similar to C. coniocraea, even in chemistry, but the presence of squamules on podetia and soredia on squamules rule that one out.

Lecanora hybocarpa?

That same wh bumpy crust w brown disks w bumpy wh margins from 2006125.

Physcia pumilior

 GEN foliose, on decid bark
thallus lobes 0.5mm wide, finely lobed, somewhat convex, somewhat bumpy esp in old parts, faintly and densely wh spotted, C-, K+ yellow, no soredia or isidia, pale tan to white bel, v d rhiz bel w dark ones fringing underside making it look almost ciliate, some black pycnidia
medulla white, K+ faint yellow w toothpick
apothecia lecanorine, v constricted bel, no rhiz, v round and flat, black, < 1mm, rim smooth and regular
spore brown, ellip, smooth, 2 cell, angular locules, 14x7um, 8 per ascus

Parmotrema crinitum?

 GEN foliose, on decid bark
thallus wide lobes, white-grey, smooth, no maculae or pseudocyphellae, lots of black dots near marg, conspic black mostly unbr cil, black bel except wide naked brown marg, edges ruffled mildly, no isidia present  probably too young, certainly no soralia or isidia marginal
no apothecia
I'm basing the ID primarily on lack of anything resembling maculae, else it could be P. ultralucens.  The genus seems pretty clear.

Buellia stillingiana?

 GEN crust, on decid bark
thallus rough, continuous, med to lt grey, no lobes, inseparable from substrate but not entirely within it
apothecia lecidine, black disc, sess, 0.6-0.7mm, conspic black rim, shiny, rim all black inside but hymenium has clear stuff inside
Amandinea has mostly invisible thallus. B. curtisii is indistinguishable w/o spores.  Probably other genera are similar as well, but I'm giving up.

Rimelia cetrata

Same as thing found on 20060125 except there are large irreg soft splotches of wh on the surface as if someone dropped little spots of bleach on it.

Canoparmelia caroliniana

 GEN foliose, on pine bark
thallus closely att, lt to med grey green, sl finely wrinkled w wh retic maculae, brown bel, some lobes tips w/o rhiz, no cil, lobes ~5mm, C-, K+ deep yell, KC?
medulla white, C-, K- to black because of disintegration, KC leaving bluish cast under cortex
isidia d, short, cyl, throughout older areas
no apothecia

Rimelia reticulata?

 GEN foliose, on decid bark
thallus flat, 3-5mm, lt grey, finely cracked, fine wh retic maculae, black bel right to edge, short black unbr cil, short abundant unbr black rhiz over entire subsurface, lobes finely lobed
no isidia or soredia or apothecia present
Could also be R. subisidiosa, but complete lack of isidia on this rather large specimen implies to me R. reticulata more probable considering the sparse clumped isidia it has versus the scattered isidia of the other.

Another sample, this time with
 GEN
thallus clumps of marg soredia, much less conspic maculae, and more naked brown areas along the marg bel, K+ yell, C-, KC-
medulla pure white, K+ yellow turning deep red, C-, KC+ red (presumably just the v strong K+ reaction swamping the C)
but otherwise the same.

Physcia americana

 GEN foliose, on decid bark
thallus lobes v br'd, 1mm wide, lt grey, smooth, dull, flat, faintly wh retic maculate on some tips, wh bel, short d wh unbr rhiz all over bel, K+ green, C-, KC-
medulla white, K-, C-, KC-
no apothecia
soredia in clumps, wh granular, scattered, to 2mm or so wide
I would've called the cortex K- or certainly not K+ yell, but it must be, else it keys to Physciella chloantha which has marginal soredia.

Punctelia rudecta?

Not sure which date I found this one.
 GEN foliose, on bark
thallus lt to med grey near tips, flat, lobes narr, conspic spots and some long cracks in cortex, v lt tan to wh all bel, d short white rhiz all bel, K+ yellow, KC+ yellow?, C-
medulla white, K-, C+ red, KC+ red?
no apothecia
isidia cyl, brown tip, v d in older parts
